This year Grade 2 students were able to learn about gardening from some very experienced gardeners.

The Westberry students and some of the residents from Caleb Village helped each other plant some flowers recently.

“I had went to teachers’ camp – SaskOutdoors this past summer and this was one of the ideas they had,” said organizer Pam Sawatzky, who helped get the program started. “I applied and was able to get a $500 grant from SaskOutdoors for the program. This helped us buy some gardening supplies and helped us out with transportation.

The program was started early in April when the students started some seeds. Recently, some of the Caleb Village residents went over to Westberry to help replant the flowers at the school.

In turn, members of the gardening club went over to Caleb Village on May 23rd to help them plant flowers on the grounds there.

“It is a great opportunity and the kids were so open to it,” said Sawatzky. “And the seniors seemed to enjoy sharing their knowledge.”

Sawatzky said that the kids also had an opportunity to plant some barley and talk about the grain, see it grow and learn about what barley is used for.
