A wider range of materials including hazardous waste will be accepted at the town’s landfill this coming Saturday during the 2018 Spring Waste Extravaganza.

The Town of Kindersley is extending its landfill hours on June 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The town and its partners are holding the 2018 Spring Waste Extravaganza at the Kindersley Waste and Recycle Centre on Highway 21. There will be several free waste options.

Kim Vogel, the town’s director of transportation and environment, said it is important for people to keep their yards clean and tidy for several reasons, so town officials decided they would establish the waste extravaganza to give people another reason to get their spring cleaning done.

She noted that the waste and recycle centre is open in the morning on Saturdays, so officials hope people take advantage of the extended hours. People will be able to dispose of a wide range of hazardous waste items.

“We’re doing a full hazardous household waste collection for free, so people can bring things that we don’t normally allow at the landfill,” Vogel said, recognizing that the hazardous waste collection is supported by GFL Environmental Inc.

The free hazardous waste collection is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The hazardous items could include adhesives, aerosols, automotive products such as used oil products, batteries, cleaners, cylinders, fuels, mercury, oxidizing chemicals, paint, solvents, light bulbs and ballasts, pesticides and fertilizers pharmaceuticals and cosmetics among other materials. People could find a full list at www.kindersley.ca and on the town’s social media sites.

The other items being accepted for free include scrap metal, concrete, asphalt and yard waste items such as grass clippings, tree parts, leaves, clay, landscape bark and garden waste. Recyclable materials will also be collected.

Vogel said there will be a cost for waste that is normally accepted at the landfill such as common household waste. Tipping fees will be charged for accepted waste on Saturday, but all minimum charges are being waived for the day. Also, no entry fees will be charged.

People will be able to recycle waste electronics. Vogel said SARCAN Recycling will on hand to collect people’s old electronics including computers, printers, fax machines, televisions, audio equipment, video equipment, cameras and telephones.

She noted that Loraas Environmental Services Ltd. will be on site and people will be able to sign up for the company’s curbside pick up program for organics, so compostable materials. There will be green bins on site.

Representatives from the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council will be at the landfill. The representatives will be set up with information on creative ways to reuse used oil, and they will also have prizes to give away. Vogel said the organization’s mascots will be there.

“We’ve got quite a wide variety of partners coming,” she added, noting the purpose of the event is to offer a day for people to dispose of items that are cleaned up from their yards or cannot be taken to landfill at other times of the year.

At a council meeting on May 28, Deputy Mayor Shaun Henry said he hopes people respect the rules at the landfill and rules for the event. He said there were people who took advantage of the event last year by discarding unaccepted items among other things. If people abuse the rules, the event could be cancelled in the future, Henry added.
