Junior girls

The KCS junior girls team hosted the four-team West Central District playoffs and did very well.

They defeated Plenty 72-11 in their first game to advance to the finals against Davidson.

This game was a bit tougher and they ended up falling a bit short, losing 38-27 and closing out their season.

Coach Shayla Olafson said that it was a tough loss.

“Davidson had a strong team and our girls were scrambling a bit,” she said. “The girls were really upset with the loss, but we are very proud of them.”

Olafson said looking back, she felt that the girls had a very positive season.

“The girls were really, really good,” said Coach Olafson. “The girls played well, like they did all season long. They were always very receptive to what we were getting them to do and it was great when they put it into practice out on the court.

“Overall, they have improved a lot especially in their passing and rebounds,” she added.

The Grade 9 squad played in lots of games this year and played in four tournaments, at KCS, Elizabeth, Unity and Rosetown.

Senior boys

The KCS senior boys, coach by Jason Hankewich, have had a pretty good season overall.

In their latest action, Feb. 9-10, they competed in an eight team tournament in Delisle and did well with a very short bench.

With just six players, they defeated Waldheim in their opening game Friday by two points.

Saturday, with just five players, they lost to Clavet, but the Kobras played a strong game and Clavet was putting out their press coverage late in the game.

In their next game against Unity, they only lost by two points, in a game that Hankewich said they probably could have won, but just couldn’t pull it out.

“The guys played incredibly well and I think the teams took us lightly, because we didn’t have very many guys, but the ones we had really played their hearts out,” said Hankewich. “A big thank you to the couple of mothers who were there, that really helped out, keeping the guys in playing shape.”

The guys will be back in action March 2-3 in Onion Lake. The following weekend, they will play in the conference championships in Biggar.

Senior girls

The senior girls, at this time do not have any scheduled games before hosting the conferences March 9-10. Teams will be coming from Outlook, Caronport, Assiniboia, Maple Creek and Rosetown.
