“I’ve been a firefighter since 1978, and been a Legion member for 37 years. I umpired baseball for roughly 34 years.” said Dave Burke. More recently, he’s taken the position of president of the Kindersley Community Service group.

Two years ago, the culture group asked the Legion how the service groups could help improve the community and support it better. With only two service groups currently operating, there weren’t enough members to generate funds for community needs. As a result, four groups joined together to raise money for the Kindersley pool project. It was impossible for each club to donate large sums of money, so the clubs had to join together to raise funds.

Dave joined the Legion because of his dad, who was a Second World War veteran. “It was the only organization I joined, and then I got more and more involved in other organizations. We’re there for our veterans, the RCMP, and our communities. We recognize the veterans who are serving now and who have passed. If you don’t know what happened in the past, you can’t look forward.”

Joining the fire department was more of a spur of the moment thing for Dave. “We have a great fire department. If it wasn’t for their dedication, it would be hard to do what we do as a group.”

No matter what the volunteer work, Dave enjoys the friendships he’s made through the years and serving the people in the community.
