The owners of Kindersley Insurance Ltd. host an annual fine dining event to raise money for a local cause. The 2018 fundraiser has been declared a success.

People gathered at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Jan. 27 to enjoy a four-course meal prepared by the owners of Kindersley Insurance with help from their staff and volunteers. People also enjoyed live music by Blackberry Wine. The evening raised $4,655.

The insurance broker covers the expenses for the evening, and all proceeds go to the charity. A new charitable cause is chosen each year and proceeds from this year’s event will go to West Central Abilities (WCA) Inc. and its future building project. The agency is raising money for a new activity centre and office space.

Mark Stockford, co-owner at Kindersley Insurance, addressed the guests before supper. He noted that 2018 marked the fourth year the business has sponsored the evening of fine dining and entertainment to support local charities.

He said the business is happy to contribute to the local charities by hosting the event, but “we enjoy doing it and we hope you enjoy the food tonight.” People had the option to make a donation to the building project and Stockford said people could get a tax receipt for donations of $20 or more. On behalf of himself and Barry Andrew, his business partner, he thanked the guests for supporting the event.

The menu featured a roasted Italian meatball topped with fresh roma and basil pesto bruschetta for an appetizer, butternut squash and sweet potato soup, the choice of Chicken Oscar or sticky barbecue ribs both served with herb roasted potatoes, fresh carrots and asparagus medley for an entree and plasir de fraises for the dessert.

In an interview on Monday, Andrew said the fundraiser went well and he is pleased with the result. Blackberry Wine puts on a good show and the music is a nice fit for the evening, he said. The time and effort is worth it.

“It’s a worthwhile event and we’re always happy to sponsor it,” he said, recognizing that raising $4,655 in an evening of wining and dining is a nice result and the business will pick another local cause to support next year.

Mark Stockford, Barry Andrew’s business partner, helps to prepare the Italian meatballs for the appetizers.

Andrew said the eventhas not supported the same charity more than once in its four-year history, so he and Stockford will choose causes based on the need at the time. Representatives from the charity help out at the event each year and WCA had several volunteers on hand to help.

Kim Edmunds, executive director at WCA, said the agency is still in the early stages of raising money for its much-needed building project, and it was great to receive the show of support from a business in the community.

“I think they see the value that West Central Abilities puts back into our community for the folks that we serve,” she said, recognizing the WCA volunteers had a fun night helping out. “The generosity is just overwhelming for our agency. This is a great kick off to probably a year or two of some serious fundraising.”

Edmunds said WCA has already put plans in place for fundraising this year. She added that the agency is looking for volunteers to sit on a fundraising committee and a building committee, so people could contact her at 306-463-2727 if they would like to help.
