The Kindersley Composite School Kobras football team will host the Fort Qu’Appelle Marauders this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rotary Field in a provincial quarter-final match.
The Kobras advanced to the provincial quarters after defeating the Meadow Lake Spartans 49-14 on Thursday in the 3A conference playoffs in front of a loud and proud hometown crowd.
This latest win came after the Kobras defeated the same Spartans team 40-0 on Oct. 13 in Kindersley in the final regular season game.
However, this game was a little different and the Spartans came out strong early, leading 7-0, then 14-7 in the first quarter. The visitors were playing with enthusiasm and were looking to come away with a win.
“We knew Meadow Lake would come out strong and we were a little worried about our start,” said Coach Tavis Lehman. “But the guys responded so well. I think the key is that we woke up.”
A blocked punt and an interception, by Kevin Pinno, quickly turned the tide for the Kobras and they were up 28-14 at the half on the way to victory.

“We stayed positive early and we fixed our mistakes,” he said. “We had some good plays on both sides of the ball and it was great to see some different guys find the back of the end zone.”
The Kobras again used both quarterbacks – Grade 10 Hudson Bahm and Grade 12 Brandon Veldhoen. Both bring a different dynamic to the game.
“Both are really good. Hudson is our future and it’s great to see him get that playing time. He’s very good at handoffs and scrambling in the backfield,” said Lehman. “Brandon can throw the long ball and is very fast. He can tuck and run and gain a lot of mileage.”
Lehman adds that they will be studying game film of the Marauders in preparation for Saturday’s game and he hopes they will be more prepared right off the start in this one.
