The Kindersley Composite School boys are off to the provincial high school curling championships.

The team led by skip Sean Cey with Kevin Pinno, Kyle Edmunds, Daniel Anderson and spare Josh Enns-Wind competed in Moose Jaw on the weekend at the conference championships and ended up finishing in second place.

They will now advance to the eight-team provincial championships in Spiritwood this weekend.

KCS received a bye in the first round in Moose Jaw, and ended up losing to Mossbank, the eventual winners, 9-5 in their opener, dropping them down to the B side of the draw.

Cue the comeback. In their next game on Friday, they defeated Dinsmore 8-2.

On Saturday, they faced Ponteix and earned a 5-4 win to advance to the B final against Swift Current, with the winner moving on and the other team going home.

KCS came up big and earned a 7-6 win.

“It was pretty stressful,” said coach Chris Oscar. “In the last game we were way up on Swift Current, but we kept getting ourselves into trouble.

“It ended up that we had to play an extra end, and Sean Cey kept his cool and ended up throwing a perfect out-turn draw for the win,” he added.

Oscar said that the boys really gained their confidence after that first game, despite the loss.

“We knew that Mossbank would be really strong, but we stayed with them and gave them a good game,” he said. “After that, the guys realized that they could compete at this level and we had a chance to go all the way.

“I’m really proud of the guys. All five of the guys got in some playing time,” he added. “They curled really well together and did a great job of representing KCS.”

In Spiritwood, the teams will be split into two pools.

The KCS team will play a round-robin Friday, beginning with Regina LeBoldus at 11 a.m.; Saskatoon Holy Cross and Spiritwood – played at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Saturday’s draw times will be dependent on the number of tie breaker games that are needed.
