On Saturday, March 10, 10 members of the Kindersley Karate Club travelled to Saskatoon to participate in the JKA Western Canadian Regional Karate Championship, with athletes from Wetaskiwin and Saskatoon clubs.

Competitions took place in three events: kata, kumite and team kata, with white to brown belts represented.

Our Kindersley athletes did very well, bringing home the following medals:

White/Yellow individual kata: Hudson Moreau – gold, Mario Romero – silver and  William Mathewson – bronze

Orange individual kata: Destiny Chester – silver, Eliana-Mai Helgason – bronze

Purple individual kata: Evan Pelletier – silver

Brown individual kata: Ronan Paulhus – bronze

Team kata (with members from other clubs) – Eliana-Mai Helgason – gold, Hudson Moreau – silver

White/Yellow kumite (sparring) – Mario Romero – gold

Orange kumite  Destiny Chester – gold, Eliana-Mai Helgason – bronze

Evan Pelletier was also awarded the Spirit Award (male), for outstanding sportsmanship and overall performance.

Sensei Jordan Staples and black belt student Andrew Glass attended the officiating clinic in the morning and took their places as officials – Glass for the first time – for the afternoon’s competition.

The next event for the KKC athletes will be the JKA National Tournament, being held in The Pas, Man., on the weekend of April 21.
