Dickinson’s venture firm to back five innovative companies

Mario ToneguzziCalgary-based District Ventures Capital, which is led by entrepreneur Arlene Dickinson, announced Friday it is investing $750,000 in five innovative companies in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. 

The companies, in the consumer goods food and health space, were selected from 100 applicants from across Canada.

It said the companies were chosen based on their product, sales and market potential. Each has received a $150,000 investment in exchange for a minority equity stake in their company.

“Food and health are two categories which impact our everyday lives,” Arlene Dickinson, general partner, District Ventures Capital stated in a news release.

“Consumers are looking for variety and healthy innovation in this space and we’re excited to partner with businesses who are providing that and more. We look forward to taking our next steps alongside these determined entrepreneurs.”

Each company receives access to District Ventures Accelerator’s five-month program which connects the founders to business, mentorship and marketing support, along with brokers, distributors and retailers to help them grow to national and international levels.

The companies include:

  1. Achieve Wellness Spa – Fort McMurray, AB – achievewellnessspa.com
  2. Borderland Food Company – Calgary, AB – borderlandfood.com
  3. Flourish Pancakes – Toronto, ON – flourishpancakes.ca
  4. Graydon Skincare – Toronto, ON – graydonskincare.ca
  5. Zak Organics – Moose Jaw, SK – zakorganics.com
