“Volunteers don’t do what we do for the honors we receive,” said long-time volunteer Gary Hamilton. “We do it because there’s a need in our community and if we don’t do it, it doesn’t happen.”

Nevertheless, Gary has been described as a tireless champion for Kindersley who has made our community better from his involvement, and encourages others around him to take part and make their mark. The words are well deserved, as Hamilton has been a member of the Elks club for 52 years. In the first year he became the organist, a position which he currently holds, along with being the secretary treasurer.

”I also look after the Elks Hall. I have the time to keep an eye on it and keep things up and make sure it’s always clean.” he says, adding “One of my pet projects was Caleb Village. It started as an Elk project, and I became chairman of the project. We visited quite a few different cities and looked at senior homes. It went off and on for six or seven years before the project was a go in March of 2008. Now it’s a perfect project, because without it many seniors would have no place to go and would have had to move out of the community. It (the project) was really gratifying.”

Gary visits Caleb once a month, when he goes there to play the organ. “When I go there to play I’m really happy that I did what I did for the project.” he says.

“I also play at the Manor any time they ask me. I very rarely say no to the Manor when they phone. I play old time music and they are appreciative of it.”
