Red Lions back in action

The Kindersley Red Lions will be back in action this weekend with two games on the slate.

They will take on Eatonia (3-6-4) at home on Friday and then host Biggar (5-8-1) on Saturday night.

The Red Lions enter 2018 with a Sask West Hockey League record of 9-4-2, good enough for third place in the division. And they have second in their sights – Macklin has 23 points in 16 games.

The Red Lions closed off 2017 with a big win, 2-1 overtime win over the Huskies on Dec. 30, and have won all three meetings this season. The Red Lions and Nationals have only met once, on Dec. 22, when Biggar came up with a 9-8 victory.

Coach Wayne Samson said that the guys should be ready to go this weekend, adding they can’t take any team lightly.

“We’ve had a good run (5-1), and will have played seven of our last 10 games at home, and we play very tough in our own barn,” he said. “Every game is tough, even though the teams this weekend are lower than us in the standings, we have to be ready to play every night.”

Having last weekend off came at a good time.

“Sure it is nice to keep the momentum going, but it was nice to get that weekend off right after new year’s,” he said. “Some of the guys were able to get away and relax.

“The break I don’t think will hurt us at all. These guys have been playing long enough, I think they will be ready to play this weekend,” he added.
