The Kindersley Storm rep club opened its indoor soccer season in style, winning a pair of silver medals at the Lakewood Kickstart Tournament on Nov. 10 to 12 weekend.

The club had three teams participating, in the under-11; under-13 and under-17 age divisions.

The U11’s had a strong showing, despite their young age.

“The team is a young team,” said club president Darin Wildman. “We only have two second years, a handful of first years and even four U9 players. For many of them, this was their first competitive tournament ever.

“They also had a few players from Rosetown that joined them,” he added. “Taking everything into account, they had a very good showing.”

The team started with a couple of losses, 3-2 to Lakewood and 2-0 to Prince Albert. However, they found their form and defeated Lloydminster 11-2 in their final game.

The U13’s also had a bit of a rough start but were able to rebound and earn a silver medal.

In their opening game, they lost 5-1 to a very tough Lloydminster club. But then they earned back-to-back wins over two Lakewood teams, winning 5-1 and 2-1.

This put them into the finals against their first opponent, Lloydminster. They lost this game by the same score, 5-1.

“This was a co-ed team and was a mixture of age groups,” said Wildman. “Shaun Poletz played in net for most of the time and he did an excellent job for them.”

The U17 Storm squad also started off slowly. They lost their first game 6-1 to the host Lakewood team.

They came back in their next two games, beating Prince Albert both times and advancing to the championship finals against Lakewood once again. This time, however, the score was much better – they lost 1-0 and brought home a silver medal.

“It was as very good start to the season,” said Wildman. “Especially considering most of the players haven’t played in a game since July 1.”

Next up for some of the Storm teams will be the Aurora Open tournament this weekend. They head to Prince Albert the following weekend for a few exhibition games, then to North Battleford for a club day.
