Bill Mullock has been volunteering in some capacity for the past 30 years. During warmer months, he can be found helping his nephew on the farm, where he is the “go for” guy, going for this and going for that. During winter months, Bill helps out at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Kindersley.

“I look after the appliances and electronics. I do the servicing, cleaning and repair, and then put them up for sale.”

He shared his memories from over three decades ago when the Salvation Army was given space in a laundromat on Main Street. That’s where Bill started volunteering and he’s been continuing to this day.

He says he “enjoys making use of his skills and qualifications. It keeps you young if you’re working,” adds the 84-year-old, freely revealing his secret to staying young.

When Bill isn’t helping on the farm or at the thrift store, he can be found helping out at church activities, or restoring antiques for family, like the treadle sewing machine he is currently working on in his garage.

Glenna Cryderman, community ministry director at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, says it has been very handy having Bill around to repair things.

“What I find is volunteers are able to get to tasks that we as staff aren’t able to get to. When staff has a day off, volunteers can fill in, getting inventory out. Or volunteers help out with jobs that require two people, so it’s nice to have a volunteer that is able to help with that.” she said.
