The 46th Kindersley Goose Festival kicks off tomorrow with the usual potato skin shredding and feather flying contests at the stage along Main Street.

Goose Festival takes place on Sept. 20-23. Events take place throughout the community on all four days of the festival, but Saturday is the busiest day with events focused on Main St. and throughout the downtown core. The festival kicks off tomorrow night in traditional fashion with the Goose Plucking and Potato Peeling events on the Downtown Kindersley Association (DKA) stage at the empty lot on Main St.

The Kindersley & District Chamber of Commerce helps by organizing and promoting the festival and its various events. The chamber also organizes several contests and people could still register for events by sending an email to [email protected] or by calling the office at 306-463-2320.

In addition to the plucking and peeling contest at 6 p.m., Synergy Credit Union is planning to do a pie eating contest at the DKA stage starting at 5 p.m.. There will also be a pumpkin contest presented by Kindersley Culture and Puddles in My Garden greenhouse.

There will be baked goods for sale tomorrow in the empty lot and the sale supports Kindersley Special Olympics. West Central Abilities will be cooking up a storm on the barbecue during the festivities at the DKA stage.

An annual Karaoke contest takes place at the Kindersley Mall on Sept. 21 starting at 7 p.m. The finals for the karaoke contest will be held at the mall on Sept. 22 starting at 2 p.m., but the contest could end on Friday depending on participation.

Other events on Sept. 21 include the Friday night Kindersley Kobras football game under the lights at 7 p.m. The mall will be open late and the Iron Horse Kindersley Klippers host the Melfort Mustangs at the West Central Events Centre (WCEC) at 7:30 p.m. The heavy horse pull starts on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. at the south end of Main St. near the Peavey Mart location, and then continues on Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.

Saturday’s events get started with the Goose Festival parade at 11 a.m. The parade route runs north on Main St., and then west on Seventh Ave. West before travelling north on First St. West to finish up. The same route has been used in the past.

Events on Saturday include the antique car show, a motorcycle show at the Red Lion Inn, live entertainment on the DKA stage, rock climbing wall, belly dancing demonstration, Kindersley Screen Arts film, inflatable jumpers and other fun for kids, Klippers NHL alumni game at the WCEC, quilt show at St. Paul’s United Church and a smartphone scavenger hunt. There will be several food options up and down Main St.

Denise Sarada, the chamber’s executive director, said it is shaping up to be a busy weekend in Kindersley. She recognized that events at the DKA stage on Thursday help to set the tone for the annual four-day festival.

The chamber runs a positive ticketing program that rewards youth for following the rules on their bicycles. If the kids get a ticket, they are entered into two draws that will be made tomorrow night at the stage. The prizes are a new bicycle and helmet, and a pool party.

She noted that the 2017 goose plucking and potato peeling champions have agreed to defend their titles in 2018. There are two full teams and a partial team entered in the plucking and peeling events, so she said she is looking to fill one team.

Sarada said there have been several floats entered in the parade, and she anticipates that more floats will be entered in the final days before Saturday. She said she would prefer that all floats are registered by Friday.

People who want to participate in the scavenger hunt need to download the Actionbound application to their smartphones, she explained. People on the scavenger hunt should pay attention to the parade, according to Sarada. She said the scavenger hunt is for all ages, but it could appeal to teenagers.

The K-Town Sky Scrapers RC plane club is doing a flying demonstration on Saturday and Sunday at the club’s flying field south of the golf course. Also on Sunday, the Kindersley Antique Threshing Club is doing its harvest demonstration and the Kindersley Clay Buster Trap Club is hosting a fun shoot.

The Goose Festival Dance takes place on Sept. 22 at the WCEC. The local air cadets and Kindersley Flying Club are hosting the annual Fly in Pancake Breakfast at the airport on Sept. 24 starting at 8:30 a.m. There will also be community worship services at Baker Park or Clearview Community Church starting at 10:45 a.m.
