The Canadian Trapshooting Championships were held in Brandon, Man., from June 27 to July 1 and three Brock residents took part.

There were 134 shooters from Canada and the United States competing in an open class and a closed class for Canadians only. The participants competed in singles, doubles and handicap events during the competition.

Singles events involve a shooter hitting one target at a time from the 16 yard line. In a doubles event, two targets are thrown at the same time at different angles, and the shooter has 2 shots to break the targets. In the handicap events, shooters are standing at different yardages from the trap house and one target is thrown out.

A shooter’s average scores and their wins in the discipline determine where they stand between 18 to 27 yards in a handicap event. Competitors start at the 18-yard line and they are moved back in increments of a half yard or full yard to the 27-yard line as their skills and averages improve. Handicap is split into 3 categories including short yardage from 18-21 yards, mid yardage from 22-24 yards and long yardage from 25-27 yards.

Three members of the Kindersley Claybusters Trap Club travelled to Brandon, MB to compete this year. Dan, Tim and Brooke Kachmarski, of Brock, shot in all events over the five days. They all competed in the D Class and were at 18 and 19-yard shooting lines in the handicap event.

On June 27, the shooters started with a doubles marathon of 150 pairs of targets. This was run in 3 events of 50 pairs each. This was a warm up for the week, and did not count towards the high overall for the week.

In Event 2 for the D Class, Tim and Dan tied for 1st place. In Event 3 for the D Class, Dan was first place, Brooke was second place and Tim was third place.

On June 28 there were 3 events including the 100 singles, 100 handicap and 50 pair doubles. Tim won the singles in Class D Event 4 – the Bruce Kent Singles. Event 5 for Class D was the 100 Handicap and Dan won the Class D 50 pair doubles event.

The events on June 30 and July 1 comprised the Canadian Championships. Event 7 on Saturday was the Canadian Championship Singles, and Tim won in Class D 200 targets. On Sunday, Event 8 was the Canadian Doubles Championship and Event 9 was the handicap championship.

At the end of the competition there were prizes for high all around on the 400 Championship targets and high overall on the 1,000 targets shot from June 28 to July 1. Tim won the Class D high all around and Dan won the Class D high overall.

This was the first time they competed in the Canadian Championships and they plan to attend again in the future. Each year the event takes place in a different part of Canada. In 2019, the national championship will be in St. Thomas, Ont.

The Saskatchewan Amateur Trapshooting Championships were held at the Swift Current Gun Club on July 12-15. Terry Maksymiw, Dan, Tim and Brooke Kachmarski of the local club all competed in the provincial amateur. The preliminary events in singles, handicap and doubles were held on July 12-13. Tim participated in the Thursday events, winning Class D in doubles. From Friday to Sunday, Maksymiw, Dan, Tim and Brooke all shot.

Maksymiw won the Class B singles and Tim won the Class D singles. The championship singles events were held on July 14. Dan won Class D and Tim, who was moved up a class based on his average scores and wins, won Class C. Brooke won the open Class D singles.

On Saturday, local shooters Dan, Tim, Brooke and Maksymiw, along with Keven Mark of the Macklin Gun Club, entered as the West Central Team in the team event. There were eight teams of five shooters each. The winners were decided by their combined scores from Saturday’s championship singles events.

When the winners were announced, a surprised West Central Team was congratulated. Sunday events were Championship handicap and doubles. Dan won the Championship doubles in the Class D closed event. Brooke won the Ladies 1 Championship handicap closed event and the high all around for the 400 Championship targets in Class D.

To be eligible for the Canadian Championships, Saskatchewan Championships or any registered event, people must become an Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) member. The Kindersley Claybusters Trap Club is a member of the Saskatchewan Amateur Trapshooting Association with a goal to expand its range to include two trap houses and more equipment.

When this is done, we will be able to hold registered shoots locally. You do not have to be an ATA member to shoot at our local club and you do not need to be experienced, so everyone is welcome. Anyone interested to shoot at the Trap Club is welcome to come out on regular shooting days on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Other times or events could be arranged. For more information, contact Dan at 306-463-7207, Rob Hulgan at 306-460-7098 or Jeff Vass at 306-460-5373.
